Q:  If there's a loving God, why is there so much suffering in the world?

There are 3 big questions here.
-  why is the world full of disasters?
-  why do bad things happen to good people?
-  why doesn't God intervene and stop the tragedies?

Let's take the first one.  Why are there earthquakes and tsunamis?
Why are there diseases?  Why are children born deformed?  If "God so loves us", and He made the world, how come Nature is so cruel?

When you're asked this question, the person asking is often trying to prove that there's no God.  They think that atheism explains the world better than religion.  So let's compare the answers from each side.

The Bible says that God designed the world to be good, pleasing, free from disasters - but it all went wrong, there was a "Fall", and the whole world is now corrupt.  The Fall was connected with free will, and disobedience, and is temporary - in the end there will be "all things new".  But why would God let His creation go wrong?  Just to give us free will?

The atheists say the world is meaningless. We are a heap of molecules reacting randomly, going nowhere. We try to keep comfortable. But there's no reason why anything should "make sense" - it's all a random accident.

So what about, say, the neighbour whose child was born crippled? The Bible says that's part of the evil in the world.  Atheism says no, it's just random accident. It doesn't matter. There's no reason.
They're just unlucky - the molecules just didn't quite get it together. It's not "bad", or "unfair" - that's just a silly self-interested human reaction.

Well, which answer makes more sense?

Not-fooling says s/he's an atheist but does NOT believe the world is meaningless.

OK, NF, what's your answer to the mother with the deformed child? Why did it happen? Where is the meaning?

To correct this article, Atheists do NOT "say the world is meaningless. We are a heap of molecules reacting randomly, going nowhere."
Nihilists take the view that life is meaningless.
As an atheist (and having spoken with many others at length), I take my own meaning from life. You get what you give and you are accountable for your own actions.
If you live with passion and keep those you love in your life, you will be happy.
Helping others (and nature!) can yield a great sense of self-worth, with no deity required! No guilt, moral bashing or air of superiority necessary at all.

People always ask why is god doing this...or why is god doing this too me...but have you ever stoped and ask why am i doing this to God? so many times we only forget to thank god for the miracles in our lifes, forget to acknowledge him when we are doing fine, but blame him when things don't go exactly to "our" plans. Well we fail to forget that we are not the ones in control here. God is. And we also fail to acknowlegde that where there is good there is evil. And the devil is real. God is not the one to blame for the problems of this world. But his is the one to seek in times of trouble and termoil. We need to stop blaming it on god and others and start to look to him to rebuild.Disasters happen. that is a part of life. And they will continue to happen. But only through God will we be able to move on past that. I hope that the next time something horrible happens you wont turn to God to blame but rather turn to him to help.
